Rest day, Villafranca, July 1

A panorama of Villafranca
July 1

I didn't really feel that I needed a rest day, but the company that did all my bookings had placed one here and it turned out to be a good thing.

I'd had some rough nights of sleeping and some very long, hot days of walking and my body has spoken up. I slept long and well last night, had a late morning siesta and about to have a post-prandial nap. As well, I've had a huge breakfast, mid-morning coffee, a very satisfying lunch with a large beer and I'm booked in for dinner tonight.

I much preferred my rest day here over the days off in the big cities of Logrono, Burgos and Leon. There are many churches here, but I get more of a sense of history and character of the place by looking at the very old buildings and the way that they merge with the new.

While I was having coffee this morning in the Plaza Mayor, I saw this old house, which had been partly demolished. Why hadn't the room been emptied?

I've become a connoisseur of rubbish bins. It seems that they don't have public rubbish collections, but place big bins all over the place and householders just arrive on foot, by car or even with wheelbarrows to dump their rubbish. This row of bins was one of the tidiest I've seen - some of them look pretty disgusting.

I've had my snooze - it's time to sort my bags and plans for tomorrow before dinner, so I'll end here.

Today's photos are a random collection of things that caught my eye - I especially liked the small public gardens at the bottom of town.

  1. Hi Peter. All the best on your walk to O'Cebreire! There is a lovely church there and, if they hold a service for pilgrims while you are there, it is really worth attending. Regards, Martin
